A notarized form is a document that confirms you are who you say you are and must be completed and signed in front of the notary public.

What is a notary public?

A notary public is a person authorized to perform certain legal formalities, including up certifying contracts, deeds, and other documents. This person can't be just a friend or acquaintance with a professional job - they have to hold the title of a notary public and be registered.

How to find a notary public

Each state will have a slightly different approach, but generally you'll be able to find a notary public by searching on the internet.

Make sure to look out for these things when finding a notary public:

• They should be commissioned - look for this on their website.

• Consider a remote notary service aka digital notaries - you could notarize through video and electronic signatures.

In certain states, your bank might be able to notarize a document for you. Make sure you check with them first.

What happens when you visit a notary public

You'll show an acceptable ID to the notary public. Prior to the visit, check their type of acceptable IDs they take and bring it with you to the notary public. You'll complete and sign the document on-site and notary public will witness it. Once this is complete, the notary public will stamp it. This means that the form is notarized.

After you've had the form notarized

Scan or take a photo of the form to upload it for your records, if needed. Make sure the photo or scan is a good quality and that all the information on the form is clearly visible.
